The Nordhorn Animal Park is founded in 1949 by the unemployed
animal friend Heinrich Johannink, trying to make
some money after WWII. On only two acres (one
hectare) he builds his own zoo, low budget and
with much help from family and friends. There are
2000 visitors at the Nordhorn Zoo on its opening
day 16 September 1950. It is located in Lower
Saxony, only a few kilometres from the Dutch
border. From then on the small zoo struggles
financially throughout its first decade until
Nordhorn city and Bentheim County join together to
form a non-profit organization, a so-called
limited liability company (GmbH).
Highlights
The main path leads along and through enclosures. Probably the biggest surprise in
Nordhorn zoo is the vulture
voliere, also awarded by the zoo keepers association. The paintings by the
chimpansees are another sort of surprise.
The
Vechtehof - farm by the Vecht river - is a 19th century farm where people and animals used to live together.
In 1999 it has been moved to zoo Nordhorn to house rare domestic animals like
the black-and-white Bentheim pig. The farm atmosphere resembles an open-air
museum.
Overall
the Nordhorn animal park is a family friendly zoo, where children can get close to the
animals. The most exotic animals in the collection are: chimpanzees,
Hartmann zebras and leopards.
Seal Hannes
August 2004 seal Hannes escapes from zoo Nordhorn. Recaptured in the Netherlands
it is transported to seal shelter Pieterburen. Zoo Nordhorn is eager beaver to
get it back, but October 2004 seal Hannes is liberated once more. The group
"Hannes free" has claimed this action. The seal shelter has stated that
Hannes has a chance to survive in the North Sea.
