The Westphalian Zoological Garden
is known as the Allwetterzoo or "All-weather zoo". The one
kilometer arched roofed pathway makes the Münster
zoo weather proof and connects the entrance building, animal enclosures,
zoo school and restaurant. Besides there is an outdoor path. A lack of
initial orientation may occur, as the map at the entrance hangs on the reverse
(wrong) wall and because of the way the two paths are stretched out.
The
old Westphalian Zoological Garden dating from 1875 is closed 31 December 1973 and demolition began to
make way for a bank building of the Westdeutsche
Landesbank. May 1974 the old zoo has been moved a few kilometers to its present
site, five times larger than before, showcasing the same animals and a
completely concrete zoo.
